    Preparation and cooking overview

This keto bagel recipe takes just 35 minutes from start to finish. The process is straightforward: mix the dough, shape the bagels, sprinkle on some seasoning, and bake. No boiling step needed! If you’re short on time, you can also make these in an air fryer or toaster oven.

    Chef's note

Let the dough rest for 5-10 minutes before shaping—it helps improve the texture. If you want cheesy bagels, mix in some mozzarella or Parmesan before baking. Looking for extra flavor? Try sprinkling onion flakes, black sesame seeds, or even cinnamon sugar on top.

🥯 Ingredients for this keto bagels recipe

To make these keto-friendly bagels, you only need the following ingredients:

    • 1 cup almond flour
    • ¾ cup Greek yogurt
    • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
    • ⅛ teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon Everything Bagel Seasoning
    • 1 egg
    Ingredients for keto bagels recipe.

    Ingredient substitutions

    • Greek yogurt: Use sour cream if you're out of Greek yogurt. It has a similar structure, and it will keep the dough moist.
    • Everything Bagel Seasoning mix: No worries if you can't find this in your local store. Make a homemade spice mix with garlic powder, dried onion, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt. Adjust the quantities according to your preference.

    Additional ingredients

Feel free to spice things up with some optional ingredients:

    • Cheese: Add some shredded cheddar, Parmesan, or mozzarella cheese to the dough for an exciting cheesy twist. You can also prepare a cheese blend of your choice.
    • Flaxseed meal: Give your dough a fiber boost by sprinkling some flaxseed meal!
    • Fresh herbs: Toss in some fresh parsley, dill, or chives for a real flavor blast. Just chop them up and stir them into the egg wash - you'll be amazed at the extra kick they provide.
    • Spices: Why not mix things up a little? Toss in some warm spices like cinnamon or nutmeg into the dough for a delightful sweet twist on your regular bagel.

    Cooking tools required

To make this Keto Bagels recipe, you will need the following kitchen tools:

    • Baking sheet
    • Mixing bowl
    • Silicone spatula
    • Brush
    • Parchment paper
    • Wire rack

    Tools substitute options

    • Parchment paper: We used parchment paper to prevent the dough from sticking to the sheet and ensure easy cleanup. If you don't have it, you can use greased aluminum foil.
    • Brush: Don't sweat it if you don't have a pastry brush handy. You can simply use a spoon to spread the egg wash over your bagels. It'll get the job done just fine!

How to make Keto Bagels: step-by-step guide

    Cooking methods

    • Baking

    Preparation steps

    1. Gather and measure all the ingredients for this recipe.
    2. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
    3. In a small bowl, crack an egg and whisk it to make the eggwash.

    Cooking instructions

    Prepare the bagel dough

    1. Start off by blending the almond flour, Greek yogurt, baking powder, and a little pinch of salt together in a mixing bowl.
    2. Use a spatula or even your hand to mix it all together until you have a firm, dough-like consistency.
    3. Next, split the dough up into four equal parts.
    4. Get your hands in there and roll each portion into a ball. Now, use your thumb to punch a hole right in the center of each ball to give it that classic bagel shape.
    5. After that, arrange your shaped bagels on your already prepared baking sheet.
    6. Then, it's time to give those bagels a good brushing with the egg wash. Make sure they're well coated.
    7. For the finishing touch, sprinkle on that Everything Bagel Seasoning right over the top.
Making a dough with spatula for bagels.
Applying the tops of the bagels with egg wash.
Sprinkling Everything Bagel Seasoning over the top of bagels.

    Bake the bagels

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    2. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven. Bake the bagels for around 20-25 minutes. You'll know they're done when they're a lovely golden brown color and feel firm when you give them a gentle prod.
    3. Once baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
    4. Serve them warm or at room temperature, plain or jazzed up with your favorite cream cheese.

    Chef's pro tip

To achieve a tender and chewy texture, be careful not to over-knead the dough. Once it comes together and feels slightly sticky, you're all set—no need for further kneading. When shaping the bagels, dampen your hands with a few drops of water to prevent them from sticking. Enjoy your perfect, homemade bagels with ease!

What to serve with keto bagels?

These homemade bagels are as versatile as they are delicious. Slice them in half and toast them to make a breakfast sandwich. Or, you can eat them with other keto delights.

    • Avacado slices: Slice the bagel horizontally into two halves and add sliced avocados in the middle for a creamy bite. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and lemon juice, and you'll have the perfect keto avocado toast!
    • Chicken filling: Stuff the bagel with Chicken Tinga filling to create a delicious bagel protein sandwich.
    • Cream cheese: Serve warm bagels with cream cheese or Labneh in the middle for a classic breakfast experience.
    • Scrambled eggs: We love to serve our bagels with scrambled eggs and fried bacon for a well-rounded fare.
    • Smoked salmon: Pair the baked beauties with smoked or Broiled Salmon and cream cheese spread for a satiating meal.
    • Spread: Serve the bagels with almond or cashew spread for a yummy experience. You can also use Creamy Jalapeno Sauce, Puttanesca, Baba Ganoush, or Tirokafteri for a delicious bagel sandwich!
    • Deli meats: Layer the bagels with deli meats and sliced cucumbers to make delicious keto-friendly sandwiches.

    How to make it healthier?

    • Add flaxseed meal for extra fiber.
    • Make your own seasoning mix to control the sodium levels.
    • Use full-fat Greek yogurt for better nutrition and taste.

    Time-saving tips

    • Want to save time and get that perfect bagel shape every time? Try using round cookie cutters! To do this, use a medium-sized cutter for the outer edge of your dough, and then use a smaller one to carve out that iconic bagel hole in the middle. This little trick makes shaping your bagels an absolute cinch, and the best part? They'll come out looking just like the traditional ones you know and adore!
    • Buy pre-made seasoning: Opt for a bagel seasoning blend from your local grocery store to save time.
    Low carb bagels served.

What can I prepare ahead of time?

    • Bagel dough: Make the dough and store it in the fridge. That way, when you're ready to bake, all you need to do is shape, season, and bake.
    • Pre-Shaped Bagels: Shape the bagels, store them in an airtight container, and bake fresh the next morning.

    Storage and reheating instructions

Don't worry if you got some leftover bagels on the plate. You can easily store and reheat them. You can also double the batch of this recipe and create more bagels for your next snack, which is why they are great for meal prepping.

    Storage instructions

    • Refrigerator: Allow the leftover bagels to cool completely after baking. Once cooled, place them in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for 4-5 days.
    • To freeze the bagels, wrap each bagel individually in plastic wrap and stash it in a freezer-safe bag. This way, you can maintain their just-baked freshness for 2-3 months! When you're ready to dig in, just remember to let them thaw out before you heat them up. That way, you get the full fresh-baked experience every time!

    Reheating best practices

    • Toaster: For a quick and easy reheating method, simply slice your bagel in half horizontally and pop the halves into your toaster slots. Set the toaster to a medium setting and let it do its thing until your bagel is nicely heated.
    • Oven: If you have a bit more time, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Unwrap your bagel, put it on a baking sheet, and pop it in the oven for about 15 minutes. This method gives you a bagel that's warm all the way through and lightly crispy on the outside, just like when it was first baked!

    Frequently asked questions

No. Traditional bagels are not okay for keto. However, our low-carb bagels, made with almond flour and Greek yogurt, are keto-friendly.

We recommend cooling for 5-7 minutes as it helps the bagels set and firm up slightly.

These sugar-free bagels are intended to be savory. But if you prefer a sweeter version, omit salt and add a small amount of monk fruit or stevia to the dough. Just be mindful of the sweetness and adjust accordingly.

No, you can't. Coconut flour absorbs more water than almond flour. So it's better if you stick to almond flour for a similar result.

Yes. It's important as egg wash gives the bagels a shiny, golden-brown appearance and helps the seasoning stick. You can also use melted butter, but it won't give the same shine.

The bagels should be golden brown and firm to the touch. Alternatively, try the toothpick method to check if they are cooked. Insert a toothpick in the center of the bagel — if it comes out clean, it's cooked perfectly.

These came out more like biscuits than bagels. Taste was good so I will keep making them.

I tried your recipe this morning but I ended up having to add more almond flour. At first my dough was too thin and not dough like consistency 😕. I added about 1/3 cup more of almond flour. Not sure what went wrong.

        Hi Dhana,

Thank you for giving our Keto Bagels recipe a try! We appreciate your feedback. Differences in almond flour brands or Greek yogurt moisture content can affect the dough consistency. If it seems thin, try adding almond flour gradually, a tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired thickness.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or if there's anything else we can help you with! Happy baking! 🥯😊
