    Cooking instructions

    1. Add one tablespoon of oil to a 10.5" or larger cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
    2. Once the skillet is hot, add the sausage rounds and sear them for 1-2 minutes per side until browned.
    3. Once they've browned, remove them and set them aside.
    4. Add in the turnips and spices and cook for 7 to 10 minutes. You'll know they're ready when a fork easily pierces through them.
    5. Add the onion to the turnips and cook for 3 minutes until it softens.
    6. Return the sausages to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes.
    7. Sprinkle with cheese and allow it to melt.
    8. Top with green onion and parsley before serving.

    Chef's pro tip

Turnips should be cooked until they are tender but still retain a slight firmness. If overcooked, they may become dark in color and develop a stronger flavor. To ensure the best results, check them after 7-8 minutes and pierce them with a fork. If the fork easily goes through, they're cooked and ready to be removed from the heat.

What to serve with this smoked sausage recipe?

    • Steamed/roasted low-carb vegetables: Pair the dish with Charred Broccoli or Mediterranean Asparagus seasoned with salt and pepper for a balanced meal.
    • Creamy avocado slices/guacamole: Add slices of creamy avocado or a side of homemade guacamole for a rich and creamy element.
    • Deviled eggs: Prepare a platter of Deviled Eggs filled with a creamy and flavorful mixture.

    How to make it healthier

    • Add your favorite low-carb veggies: Boost the nutritional value of the dish by incorporating your favorite low-carb vegetables into the recipe.
    • Opt for low-fat shredded cheddar cheese: Choose low-fat cheddar cheese to reduce the overall fat content.

What can I prepare ahead of time?

    • Pre-cut the ingredients: Before you start cooking, pre-cut the sausages, turnips, and onions. Place them in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. When it's time to cook, simply grab the pre-cut ingredients, and you'll save valuable time on prep work.

    Storage and reheating instructions

    Storage tips

    • Refrigerator: Allow the cooked sausage to cool completely before placing it in an airtight container. Store the container in the refrigerator and consume the leftovers within 3-4 days for the best flavor and quality.

Note: Avoid freezing these leftovers, as turnips may become mushy upon thawing.

    Reheating best practices

    • Microwave: Place a portion of the dish in a microwave-safe container and cover it with a microwave-safe lid or plastic wrap. Heat it on high heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even heating.
    • Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Transfer the dish to an oven-safe baking dish and cover it with aluminum foil. Heat the leftovers for 15-20 minutes, then remove from the oven and serve.

Never had a turnip in my life! This meal was fantastic. We didnt ahve beef a/cheddar kiolbassa but we used jalepeno/beef and it was also delicious. We topped with a fried egg. The perfect flavorful brunch! This may become a weekly staple. Thank you!

Hoping to try this tonight! Looks yummy! Would it work to sub radishes for the turnips? (New to radishes . And turnips. 🙂 )

Hi KC, radishes have a bit more water than turnips so they won't be crispy. Some readers like this recipe with radish though so feel free to give it a try!

I haven't made this just yet - and maybe this is a silly question - but I have seen the terms turnip and rutabega used interchangeably in recipes before - where a rutabega should be used but the recipe calls for turnip. Can you verify what veggie you actually use in this recipe - the turnip (white/purple skin with white flesh) or a rutabega (gold/purple skin with gold flesh)? Thanks!

Hi Heather - we used turnips in this recipe as we don't find the two interchangeable. Turnips are a bit peppery whereas rutabagas are sweeter.
